iWhisper semi-finalist at the AppMyCity Prize

Want to map your city, find the best route to work, discover new facets of your home city or report urban problems? Look no further… we’ve picked ten urban apps that can help you do these things and more, as part of our international AppMyCity! Prize.

Here are the ten contenders we selected for the Prize, which celebrates mobile apps that make good cities great:

  • AirCasting, from New York City, is a platform for recording, mapping and sharing health and environmental data through real-world measurements, annotations and CrowdMap sharing.

  • BuzzJourney, from Kfar-Saba, Israel, maps all routes from point A to point B by public transportation, buses, trains, taxis, bicycle rentals, AND facilitates real-time ride sharing, enabling any driver to turn his car into a temporary taxi.

  • Colab, from Recife, Brazil, connects citizens to cities by allowing them to report daily urban issues, propose new projects and solutions, and evaluate public services.

  • Dérive app, from Johannesburg, is a randomly generated way to explore in and engage with a city.

  • iWhisper, from Amsterdam, facilitates audio-tours and location-based audio experiences through custom-made apps for cities that offer citizens and visitors diverse audio experiences.

  • paprika, from Rio de Janeiro, helps users create personalized “instant social network” at any place in the city to discuss daily events as well as global issues, exchanging localized information.

  • PublicStuff, from Philadelphia, helps urban governments turn civic inquiries into tangible civic improvements by connecting people directly to their city representatives and with each other.

  • Urbanias, from São Paulo, is a Social-Local-Mobile platform encouraging users to explore and observe local happenings.

  • VaiRio, from Rio de Janeiro, guides locals and visitors through traffic, reducing the time and greenhouse gas emissions by delivering geo content on transit options and the best way, according to the most frequent routes by registered users.

  • Walkability app, from New Delhi, crowdsources data on walkability to inform government on how to recreate walkable urban spaces and is supported by CleanAirAsia.

These ten semi-finalists were picked by the New Cities Foundation team out of a total of 92 applications coming from all 5 continents. They will now be judged by our expert panel and three finalists will be selected to join us at our New Cities Summit in São Paulo.

In their final bid to win, the three finalists will present their project live at the summit. The final prize will be 5,000 USD.

The three finalists will be announced on May 13.
